Reviving the words of Black Indians
I utilized the narratives at http://www.gutenberg.org/files/20785/20785-h/20785-h.htm#Page_8 to discern informants self-identified as freedmen, freedwomen, native, or slaves of Native American tribes. The list below represents the sixteen interviewees and link to the associated narrative. The names of thirteen freedwomen and three freedmen are presented in the chart, below. It is my hope that this project will be useful in enhancing access to first-hand accounts of freedmen history. In additional blog posts, I will explore each informant’s narrative in relation to genealogical and historical records.
